Yeah, I have no idea what to write tonight, so here goes this idea. Just in case you are numerologically minded, today is the 220th calendar day of 2017 (non Leap Year). Expressed in decimal form, today is 0.05882352941. And somewhere in tonight’s diary will be my 1,500th comment under the new UID.
Below, I will do a little “This Day in History” spiel but I would like to take a moment to recognize the holidays being celebrated today, aside from National Frozen Custard Day.
Today is National Dollar Day, when the Continental Congress established our monetary system. Oddly enough, it’s also National Happiness Happens Day. Make of that what you will.
There are a pair of related holidays also recognized today, National Zucchini Day and National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day. For those of you who have ever grown zucchini, you understand. In some parts of the country, zucchini season is the only time people lock their cars and houses.
Today is also International Female Orgasm Day. The holiday was created in Espertina, Brazil by councilman Arimateio Dantas who introduced a law that obligated husbands to give their wives the “Big O” on this day. Is it enforceable? Who knows. Is it the most popular law in Brazil? Probably.
And now, a word from our sponsors ...

August 8 Birthdays:
Esther Hobart Morris
Hobart Morris is known as the “Mother of Woman Suffrage”. While not being a p art of any specific organization, she championed laws giving married women property rights and providing equal pay for teachers.
A young Esther Hobart spoke out against slavery and advocated for women's right to organize societies aiming to abolish slavery. It is said that she was involved in one altercation attempting to stop slavery advocates from destroying her abolition-friendly church in Oswego, NY. That church, by some reports, was the first antislavery church established in the country.
Hobart Morris was also appointed to a nine month term as Justice of the Peace in Wyoming in 1870, the first female named to the post in the United States.
Dustin Hoffman
The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy, Rain Man, Tootsie, among others
Dustin Hoffman: facing down my demons
Is his reputation for being hard work deserved? "The media are lazy. It becomes the truth if you repeat it over and over." So is he difficult? He uhms and ahs. "There are a few directors I've worked with where we've clashed, but they are certainly in the minority. Some of those directors have been very verbal about it. I don't do that. I think it's immoral, cowardly, to wash your dirty linen in public. So I don't answer them in print."
Keith Carradine
Winner of the 1975 Oscar for Best Original Song “I’m Easy” in Robert Altman’s Nashville. If you click only 1 link in this diary, click this one!
Carradine also played “Wild Bill” Hickock in HBO’s Deadwood, turned in an amazing guest spot as a criminal on Criminal Minds, and pursued Madonna in the Material Girl video.
Currently, he is also POTUS on CBS’ Madame Secretary, a Republican I would much rather have than the current vacationer-in-chief. Alas, if wishing, and a Magic 8 ball, only made it so.
Emiliano Zapata
Founder and Commander of the Liberation Army of the South in the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920). His soldiers, and those who espoused his agrarian political philosophy were known as Zapatistas.
Zapata worked to return many haciendas to the people who worked them in Anenecuilco. He was arrested for his part in an uprising against the hacienda on which his family worked, later pardoned, and was elected to the position of president of the council board.
He created agrarian commissions to redistribute land, personally supervising their work to ensure impartiality and to keep landowners from exerting influence.
Zapata also established a Rural Loan Bank, the country’s first agricultural credit organization, and tried to reorganize the sugar industry of Morelos into cooperatives.
Zapata also famously appropriated the phrase “Rather Die on My Feet than Live on My Knees”. The phrase was adopted and popularized in Latin America and later the US by Che Guevara.
Other Notable Birthdays
Musician The Edge, tennis champion Rodger Federer, actress Connie Stevens, swimmer and actor Esther Williams, and former Supreme Court Justice Arthur J Goldberg.

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
Note: Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? Contact brillig.
