I have finally figured out what is really wrong with the Democratic Party. We love the practice of self-recrimination more than we love winning elections. If there are ashes and hair shirts to don, we’re all in.
We are absolutely thrilled to blame each other for whatever went wrong in the last election, is currently going wrong in Washington, the country, the world, or on the Bachelorette and then demand immediate change or the party is going to hell in a hand basket.
The true Progressives (Bernie or Busters) have a purity test that everyone else must meet or else be labeled tools of the establishment, corporate functionaries dedicated to promoting their handpicked candidates even though there are more electable, progressive candidates waiting in the wings. The first thing we need to do is get rid of Nancy Pelosi.
The moderates (Blue Dog Democrats) are wringing their hands worried that the country will think that all we are are obstructionist if we don’t at least try to work with Republicans on their agenda. They believe that if we just show we’re willing to reach “across the aisle” to the madmen currently screwing our country, we’ll win more votes in elections. The first thing we need to do is get rid of Nancy Pelosi.
We can’t forget the party pragmatists who insist that we’ll start winning elections the second we relax our unreasonable pro-choice stance and start welcoming pro-life candidates into the fold. Apparently the section of the party platform that states that all women must be afforded reproductive rights and control over their own bodies is written in disappearing ink. It goes without saying that the first thing we need to do is get rid of Nancy Pelosi.
Then, of course, there are the party sexists (both male and female) who believe that no matter what is wrong, it’s the fault of the woman candidate/politician. The first thing we need to do is get rid of Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris . . . oh yeah, and f**k Hillary Clinton!!
No wonder we keep losing elections . . . well, if you don’t count voter suppression a third world dictator would envy, redistricting that allows lawn gophers to vote but not people of color, college students or poor people, and outside interference in the electoral process from any foreign agent with a laptop.
We, in the Democratic Party, have perfected the art of the circular firing squad, and we’re about to take aim and fire again. Before we do let me just point out that there is only one enemy here (in normal times I would have said opponent, but these are anything but normal times) and it isn’t each other.
The big orange cheeto and his merry band of enablers in Congress are destroying our country, our freedoms and our values. We can either put away our home version of Family Feud, remove our heads from our posteriors and start working together to bring our faux president and the deplorable Republicans down, or we can keep attacking each other, ensuring that the Party does go to hell in a hand basket. Our choice.
