Tomorrow I will meet the principal of my new school, as well as meet with the woman most in charge of academics (herself a former social studies teacher). i have three sections of Local, State, and National Government; two of AP US Government & Politics, and one of AP Microeconomics.
I have taught government in contentious times — impeachment of Bill Clinton, passing of Military Commissions Act, etc. But most of that was in a school where I was known and given a great deal of latitude. That is one issue I need to explore tomorrow. And again, I am so easy to find online whether or not I address issues in class students are likely to know where I stand.
But how do we teach about how the federal government is supposed to work when the administration we currently have seems not to care about things like filling key positions, continuity with our allies, separation of powers, and in a basic sense the Constitution itself.
I will probably comment here from time time.
It could be a real challenge.
