“I’m pretty sure we paid more taxes toward our day ‘trip’ than you did. Pretty sure the amount we sacrifice per year is a lot more than you’d be willing to sacrifice if the choice was yours,” Linton wrote. “Do you think the US govt paid for our honeymoon or personal travel?! Lololol.”
Clearly, the French Revolution was hampered by the absence of the Internet. If the French had bothered to check Wikipedia they would have discovered that there is no evidence whatsoever that Marie Antoinette, the last Queen of France before the Revolution, ever uttered the phrase, “let them eat cake.” Had anyone bothered to check, probably the whole misunderstanding could have been avoided.
But today we’re blessed not only with the Internet but with an Internet that never forgets.
When Treasury Secretary Mnuchin’s wife, the B-movie actress Louise Linton, disdainfully and haughtily mocked a commenter from Oregon who criticized her for tackily flaunting her Hermes and Valentino apparel on a government-sponsored junket to Kentucky last month, that episode fairly showed the essence of her character, and by extension, provided some insight into the character of the Goldman Sachs hedge fund manager Trump placed in charge of the nation’s financial well-being who chose to marry her.
Folks here may recall Linton followed up with a horse manure mea culpa cleverly buried in a Washington high life magazine:
“My post itself and the following response were indefensible. Period. I don’t have any excuses, nor do I feel any self-pity for the backlash I experienced,” she said. “I sincerely take ownership of my mistake. It’s clear that I was the one would was truly out of touch and my response was reactionary and condescending.”
Well that’s nice. And she and her hubby probably thought that the issue was safely put to bed. But now it really appears that the character of the Linton/Mnuchin team is even worse than she exhibited before. Because not only did she snottily mock someone for their class standing, she did it based on a lie that both she and her husband were fully aware of at the time:
“Do you think the US govt paid for our honeymoon or personal travel?! Lololol.”
Well Louise, as it turns out, you and your husband asked them to:
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin requested (and was denied) use of a government jet for his honeymoon in August, ABC News reported late Wednesday.
***
An Air Force spokesman told ABC News that the operation of a government jet like the one Mnuchin requested could cost approximately $25,000 per hour.
An unnamed official in the Treasury Department’s Office of Inspector General said the office began an “inquiry” into Mnuchin’s request for honeymoon transport.
When you have to feign ignorance to hide your own duplicity in insulting someone you’re operating on some seriously thin moral ice. The very idea of a government employee like Mnuchin thinking it was A-OK to use a $25,000 per hour taxpayer funded jet for his honeymoon is bad enough. The fact that Mnuchin’s wife defended her own obnoxious comments about her own wealth and that of her husband by using the idea of a government-funded honeymoon trip as a phony straw man is just another demonstration of the complete moral bankruptcy of this Administration and its appointments.
