Good day and welcome to DKos Asheville. This is the weekly DKos Asheville Open Thread for Saturday, September 2nd.
We offer this space every weekend to share what we're up to in Western North Carolina and beyond.
We hope this group and others serve to invigorate us locally and regionally here on Daily Kos, building on the sense of community that's grown through our online engagement.
DKos Asheville and other local and state groups can give us all a better sense of connection, a better understanding of who we stand with, work with and share with. We hope this local and wider community can help leverage our orange passion for progressive politics to move the county forward.
Following is the Daily Kos Mission Statement and we are proud to be part of this movement, on the keyboards and on the ground.
Daily Kos fights for a progressive America by empowering its community and allies with information and tools to directly impact the political process.

Date: Saturday, September 23, 2017; 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Venue: The PSI Theatre at the Durham Arts Council, 120 Morris St., Durham NC

Theme and Goal: To provide an opportunity for southeastern (and particularly North Carolina) progressive activists + volunteer professional technologists to connect and to think through, together, what are the opportunities and the needs for "data-driven activism" (activists and technologists working together) in preparation for the 2018 election, with an emphasis on voting rights and get-out-the-vote (GOTV).
Program Format: Keynote speech, followed by a combination of mini-presentations (15-20 min + Q&A) highlighting activists' use of data, plus panel discussions on the broad topics of Coalition Building, Data and Activism for GOTV, and Strategy. Panel discussions will be unscripted conversations, seeded as necessary by a facilitator's questions and audience input. Weather permitting, an extended lunch break at a close-by urban mini-park will provide audience members and speakers the opportunity for freewheeling discussions.

After a break last year, LAAF (Living Asheville Arts Festival) returns! This very fun street festival showcases the creative personality of Asheville with a focus on local. Join in the annual end-of-summer (Sunday of Labor Day Weekend) celebration of Asheville's artistic and musical communities. Three blocks of North Lexington Ave in downtown Asheville brim with all local art, food, beer, music, street performers, and random acts of creativity between College Street and the I-240 overpass. Hours are 12-9 PM.
Three stages of music and performance include rock and roll, indie pop, funk, folk, ragtime, reggae, world beats, singer songwriters, bluegrass, old time, drummers, vaudeville, fire dancers, break dancers, hula hoopers, and circus arts. This participatory, innovative, art-focused street festival that strengthens our local community. LAAF has long been known for bringing the “weird” out of Asheville with an emphasis on sustainability and authenticity. It was previously called the Lexington Avenue Arts and Fun Festival.
LAAF is an experience for the entire family. Through creativity, we can more effectively contribute to preserving our resources and thus ensuring that there is comfort and prosperity for all. LAAF seeks to be a catalyst for the creativity and community building that will lead to these positive developments for all members of the Asheville community.
We will be performing throughout the day and have a clown workshop from 2:00 PM — 3:00 PM.
From the Mountain Circus Arts Facebook page:
We have a featured spot at this year's LAAF in Downtown Asheville presenting a full session clown workshop from 2:00-3:00 pm. Look for us strolling as well but you don't want to miss this workshop. The full hour gives us time for a full range of classic clowning knowledge with total audience involvement including many kids on stage.
History of clowning, clown types (makeup, costume, character), skill sets (juggling, magic, skits).
Be there or be square!
Have a great weekend everyone!
