When Kellyanne Conway was asked last December whether it was “presidential” for Donald Trump to outright lie about there being “millions” of fraudulent votes cast in 2016, she responded: “Well, he's the President-Elect. So, that's presidential behavior—yes.”
Now comes Sarah Huckabee Sanders declaring Monday during the White House briefing that whatever Trump does to defend our country is "always appropriate," even when he's calling American citizens a "son of a bitch."
Here’s the exchange (with the must-see video below the fold):
NBC’s Peter Alexander: What message does it send for the president to stand behind the presidential seal at a rally in Alabama and call an American citizen who is expressing his First Amendment rights, a son of a bitch?"
SHS: Again, I think it's always appropriate for our president to defend our flag, to defend the national anthem...
Alexander: Is it appropriate to use that language about an American citizen...
SHS: Hold on, I'm not finished. It's always appropriate for the president of this country to promote our flag, to promote our national anthem and ask people to respect it.
Apparently, defending “the flag” doesn't include defending the First Amendment.
But the message is clear: Trump can do anything—absolutely ANYTHING—and it’s de facto perfectly “appropriate” because he did it.
