With all the hoopla about idiot in chief’s latest dumbass move, I think (and perhaps I’m getting into tinfoil hat territory), it’s more than meets the eye. We all know that he wallows in adulation, but I believe he throws these seemingly insane tweets out there to gauge just how close we are to the slow road to authoritarian rule.
Ok, maybe I need to breathe. After all, anyone who reads (yeah, I know, I know) knows that the pledge did not originally have the words “Under God” until 1954, when Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add it in as a response to the communist threat. And I enjoy pointing out to all my MAGA wearing family that the original pose was not hand over the heart, but hand straight out in the air (looking like a Nazi salute), so of course we changed that after WWII.
But still, until I am sure that there was no Russian influence in our election, I have this nagging fear that we are seeing the same threat my grandparents saw when they left Europe in the early 20th century. And it’s abetted by those who say nothing for the sake of family peace or those who “just don’t want to get involved in politics because it’s so ugly.”
So I resolve to keep marching, keep talking and keep working to get out the vote. As Ben Franklin said after the Constitutional Convention of 1787 when asked if we had a Republic or a Monarchy; “A Republic, if you can keep it.”
