Marco Rubio doesn't want to craft a DACA bill unless he knows whether Donald Trump will sign it or not. More, he wants Trump to provide guidance. That isn't the way government is supposed to work. Article I, Section 1 of the Constitution - the very first sentence - tells Congresspeople to get off their ass: "All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States".
Just in case his responsibility wasn't clear to this son of immigrants, the Constitution spells out what Congress is supposed to do. Included is the responsibility: "To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization".
So Marco needs to pull on his big boy pants and do his job. In this case, the need is greater because no one knows, including Trump himself, what he might sign.
John Kasich defended dreamers on 'CBS This Morning' by asking people to "Imagine if you were one of them". A nice sentiment - but a request doomed to failure. There is no point in asking a conservative to have empathy - if they were capable of empathy they wouldn't be conservatives.
Mike Huckabee has his usual sham Christian take on DACA repeal - calling it 'incredibly merciful'. In his estimation, the 6-month delay makes the cruel act palatable because Congress will surely come up with a solution. But that is like tempering a cancer diagnosis with the promise there may be a cure in 6 months. Reasonable people think 'incredible mercy' would be a diagnosis of no cancer in the first place.
Rep. Steve King (R-IA), Congress's leading anti-immigrant voice, thought the delay would lead to perdition. By his calculation, it would lead to an amnesty that would in effect be a 'Republican suicide'. Where he gets his information from is anybody's guess as opinion polls show people overwhelmingly support DACA.
However, suicide wasn't the only thing on King's mind. If he couldn't get rid of DACA recipients, he could delight that they would have to 'live in the shadows". And the reason for his sadistic glee? Let him explain: "They continue to live the objective that they sought to achieve when they illegally entered America." Except the average age of these 'miscreants' on arrival in the US was just six. I suppose in King's mind these inherently evil folk come by their nefarious intentions at an early age.
It is dawning on Trump that his DACA debacle is a political shot in the foot. At first, he tried his usual indolent MO - pushing the hard work off on others, tweeting: "Congress, get ready to do your job - DACA!". But then, as his DACA folly sat unloved and alone, he tweeted, "Congress now has 6 months to legalize DACA (something the Obama Administration was unable to do). If they can't, I will revisit this issue!"
Revisit? What does that mean? Who knows? Certainly not Trump.
