“Watch what?” said absolutely no one in this politically astute, saavy crowd ever. Well, that and the fact the Grammy’s were last night :-). Yes, tomorrow is the 2018 State Of The Union address to a joint session of Congress. Grab whatever beverage you may need as you contemplate that thought (no, not that bottle of cabernet. That’s mine. Yes, all of it) and hop below the Story Break after a word from our sponsor!
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
Ever since I can remember, I’ve watched the State Of The Union. Just like voting and serving when called for jury duty, it feels like one of my civic responsibilities as a citizen of the United States. Plus, I’ve always wanted to watch for myself because of the sheer amount of spin put onto speeches of any sort. I want to hear the tone, see the body language, etc.
But this is not a normal State Of The Union, and these are not normal times. I quite literally do not know if I can actually sit through what passes for An Address To Congress by the Current Occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. And I’m feeling conflicted:
Pros:
I can legitimately say YES if asked whether I “actually watched for myself.”
No spin by anyone except whatever voices are in my own head.
Real-Time fact checking from a variety of sources.
The liveblogging here will make infinitely more sense.
My blood sugar reading on Wednesday morning will be super fantastically lower than normal, because red wine lowers my overnight blood sugar.
Cons:
That voice. That smarmy arrogant AF attitude.
The lies, the lies on top of lies and the smug smile while delivering them.
Giving him ratings points that inflate his Supersize Me ego.
Having to look at Trump, Ryan and Pence all in one image for the entirely of the address.
Having to remove all throwable objects from the living room, because I can’t afford to replace my TV.
My liver. My poor liver (See: phenomenally low blood sugar, above)
So- are you going to watch tomorrow night, or wash your hair/sort your sock drawer/curl up in a room cuddling puppies? Share your plans in the comments!! I’ll be here with tomorrow’s Top Comments to chat and/or commiserate all about it!
But first, what you really come here for… the trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures that are the scaffolding of this community diary series.
TOP COMMENTS
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? From joniworx:
Nominating this comment by 88kathy, from AndySchmookler’s The Profound Hypocrisy of the Republicans Depicted by Paul Krugman in Five Brief Tweets. It's little acknowledged, but I think quite succinctly put - a way of honing in on the R agenda neatly and easily. I especially like the "burka her up" phrase.
From ericlewis0:
In the CUA diary, slksfca informed us that Sen. Gillibrand is inviting the mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico to the State of the Union. bleeding blue’s response is gold.
From yours truly, brillig:
wagatwe shared the Department of [Un]Education's plans in New student loan program would allow feds to monitor, control student purchases. Orcas George has a thought about one reason why; as do DFWmom and noweasels.
Highlighted by bennyann:
Is this excellent comment by JCPOK on the differences between now and the Watergate era, and what it portends. What we need to focus on.
Highlighted by Interested Observer:
Is this thought-provoking comment by PJ the WB Lefty, on the question of both sides doing it.
Highlighted by Elizabeth NYC:
