This is how a coward confirms that yes, Donald Trump called Haiti and African nations “shithole countries.” Sen. Lindsey Graham has finally broken his silence with a statement saying, in part:
Following comments by the President, I said my piece directly to him yesterday. The President and all those attending the meeting know what I said and how I feel.
Yeah, Lindsey, you don’t get to look brave by claiming you stood up to the bully in private while refusing to confirm that he said the thing.
The American ideal is embraced by people all over the globe. It was best said a long time ago, E Pluribus Unum—Out of Many, One. Diversity has always been our strength, not our weakness. In reforming immigration, we cannot lose these American Ideals.
Milquetoast!
The American people will ultimately judge us on the outcome we achieve, not the process which led to it.
It won’t matter that a sitting president referred to countries with predominantly black populations as “shitholes,” or that Lindsey Graham didn’t condemn it, if they come up with a policy that’s not too overtly hateful? But can’t we do both? Condemn and have a non-hateful policy?
I appreciate Senator Durbin’s statements and have enjoyed working with him and many others on this important issue.
So, again, Durbin was telling the truth. Gotcha.
Graham ended with blah blah blah bipartisanship is the answer, but here’s the thing, Lindsey: If you’re using bipartisanship as an excuse to sweep bigotry under the rug, you’re doing it wrong. Your chance to be bipartisan here is by doing the right thing—condemning Trump and fighting for immigrants. Being like “I can’t condemn a member of my own party because bipartisanship” isn’t even a fig leaf on your cowardice.
