According to the Newsweek story, the Zambia tourism Facebook page is not affiliated with the government; instead, like other countries, states and communities, it’s run by an individual or business. Still, it’s one heck of a creative ad, inspired by Trump’s “shithole” statements and his ugly language about the entire continent.
“Visit ****Hole Zambia,” the ad says, with an added footnote: “Where the only stars and stripes you’ll have to see are in the sky and on a zebra!” Another page says the country is "where beautiful vistas and breathtaking wildlife are our trump card!" I see what you did there.
The official Zambia tourism board says the ad does not represent their government which, after all, receives nearly $800 million annually from the U.S. in “development assistance.” Unfortunately, Trump’s enough of a vengeful and ruthless jackass to eliminate even that funding over a joke at his expense—nudging African countries even closer to China, says Ismail Einashe, on assignment for NPR:
The danger for the U.S. is that Trump's insulting words make China an even more enticing partner for African nations. This is a moment of opportunity for the Asian giant. Trump's apparent disrespect may push African nations — and the young Africans who represent their future — further into China's arms.
I’ve worked a lot with tourism councils, mostly on ecotourism projects. Zambia, a landlocked country of about 17,000,000 people, has marvelous scenery, wildlife and cultures to share—Victoria Falls and great National Parks among the attractions. Fuck Trump, it’s time to plan a visit.
