A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.
If you are new to the site or have been lurking, we invite you to join in the friendly banter here. Don’t be shy, say anything, it will be well received.
note: I wrote this diary two days ago. Yesterday, another diary about the same thing was published. It goes into who some of the players are behind it. I’ll put the link to that diary here at the top.

On Tuesday, January 15, 2017, New California was born. All the blue areas in the map above joined to leave the state of California to become the 51st state. They are serious about it and are following the game plan West Virginia did to leave Virginia. On that date, New California Declaration of Independence took place.
Almost exactly a year later, on January 13, 2018, the Delegates Convention took place. Delegates voted on the final New California State Declaration of Independence. It passed. A year ago, most urban and blue liberal areas were to remain in California. Then, over the past year, some blue and mostly urban counties joined including Santa Clara County (with San Jose), Contra Costa County (with Walnut Creek and Richmond) and Santa Cruz Counties.
But it got even weirder in the past couple months when even more counties chose to join in including Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, and Monterey Counties.
Humm. That means just the area around the San Francisco Bay Area would still be California along with Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties in the south. It’s a stampede to join New California.
Those behind New California want to do things by the book, citing Article 4, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution:
- U.S. Constitution› Article IV
Article IV
New states may be admitted by the Congress into this union; but no new states shall be formed or erected within the jurisdiction of any other state; nor any state be formed by the junction of two or more states, or parts of states, without the consent of the legislatures of the states concerned as well as of the Congress.
The Congress shall have the power to dispose of and make all needful rules and regulations respecting the territory or other property belonging to the United States, and nothing in this Constitution shall be so construed as to prejudice any claims of the United States or of any particular state.
Section 4.
The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government and shall protect each of them against invasion, and on application of the legislature, or of the executive (when the legislature cannot be convened) against domestic violence.
The old idea of dividing California into 6 individual states has been scrapped. Below is a map of what that looked like. Keep in mind The State of Jefferson (which is where I live) was going to go it alone and become the 51st state until last year when the concept of New California was hatched.
Not surprisingly the alt.right and white supremacists laud this movement as well. A number of them are behind this thing including Robert Paul Preston who makes the Agenda 21 podcast, Lauren Rose (ethno-nationalist who wants to create New California because “English is dying in California”), Victor Hansen (“It’s logical for white people to fear black men”) and Tom Reed (of The State of Jefferson fame).
