It’s very rare that I feel like DC has done something appropriate for the Trump presidency but shutting down the government on the one year anniversary or his inauguration is just that. It looks like Schumer has taken the gamble and gone into shutdown mode over DACA. Good for him. Good for the Democrats in the Senate. The government is shut down for the first time in 5 years and the GOP should shoulder all the blame, although they are full on behind the blame-a-Dem strategy.
But first, a word from our sponsors ...

Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
Also: best breakdown of this #releasethememo thing I have seen. I refuse to spend
any more time on it.
Make no mistake, we are now in a full on publicity free for all. I don’t expect the 30 something percent who will always approve of Trump’s bullshit to be moved by any of this but the soft middle is up for grabs on this one. The Fox News and Breitbart cronies will do everything they can (in collusion with Russian bots and trolls) to make this an opportunity to hurt the Democrats. We cannot let this happen.
The one thing I know for sure is that I really REALLY wish I was marching in DC today. le sigh
We are truly living in interesting times. I will not lie. I am losing my hope and faith in this country and its ability to get things on track. I will not say again (there is still too much to be done) but at one point I at least had hope that there were enough doing the work to bend the moral arc of history. Whatever patriotism I ever felt for the US always stemmed from the desire to create that More Perfect Union. With that gone, I’m a full on radical commie snowflake.
So now is the time to get out in your networks of online and real life worlds to make sure that people understand that this shutdown is a GOP failure and not “obstructionist” Democrats. Make your cases. Make it happen.
Also, there is a collection of marches happening around the nation today. I welcome all the energy and time being given to the belief that this is NOT normal. I welcome a world in which women have more voice and authority in this nation. But most of all I welcome the newly radicalized marchers even as I wonder where they have been at all the marches, vigils, and sit ins I have been attending or hearing about from friends in years past.
And while I’m at it, I thought I would share this piece from HuffPo by S.T. Holloway titled Why This Black Girl Will Not Be Returning To The Women’s March. Holloway speaks to the lack of intersectionality on the Left. Intersectionality meaning that we need to look at the intersections of class, race, and gender to truly get at the underpinnings of our problems.
It is these issues affecting women of color, along with the effects of mass incarceration on our communities, the rate at which our children are disproportionately punished in schools, the lack of access to quality and affordable health care, the threat of destroying families as a result of deportation, the disproportionately high number of black trans women that are murdered, and so on, that are often met by deafening silence by our white sisters.
And now for the Tops ...
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
