That didn't take long. The White House is crowing about how Senate Democrats "blinked."
White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah on Monday said Senate Democrats “blinked” in their stalemate with GOP leadership over government funding, and he criticized them for not agreeing last week to avert a shutdown.
“I think the fact they are voting in favor of this proposal that they rejected a few days ago is sort of evidence that they blinked,” Shah told CNN shortly after most Senate Democrats joined Republicans in voting to re-open the government after three days.
He also said this: "We think that leader McConnell is going to bring forward something that the president can sign. The Graham/Durbin proposal is not a proposal the president can sign." All that bipartisan negotiating that Sens. Lindsey Graham and Dick Durbin have been working on, the basis of the agreement Democrats made to go ahead and let this stop-gap bill pass? The White House is already ruling it out.
Meanwhile, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is continuing the racist, deplorable line that the Dreamers are "illegals": "I think if we’ve learned anything during this process it’s that a strategy to shut down the government over the issue of illegal immigration is something the American people didn’t understand."
Trump and McConnell—and certainly Speaker Paul Ryan and his Freedom Caucus controllers—are already setting up the next Trump Shutdown on Feb. 8. And in the interim, another 2,200 Dreamers will become vulnerable to deportation.
