The Democrats caved!
This was a win!
This was a loss!
Democrats don’t care about DREAMers!
Trump was never going to do anything about DACA!
We can’t trust Mitch McConnell!
We freed 9 million hostages but still have 800,000 hostages!
Our messaging sucks!
We shouldn’t have shutdown the government!
These have been the major themes of diaries and the front page, Rec List and Most Shared sections here followed by an avalanche of angry, snarky comments that result in us arguing with each other and are the farthest thing from being proactive. Just like the Hillary/Bernie debate, I’m already sick and tired of this being a win/loss debate. Yes, CHIP was added to House spending bill because Democrats fought and pushed for it. That’s resolved. Of course I don’t trust Mitch McConnell. of course I knew Trump would never sign on to the Durbin-Graham act with Stephen Miller running the place. Also, I knew that the shutdown wasn’t going to matter by the time of the midterm elections. The government was going to be open again before November. Look, I cover these races closely and I have been doing so since the end of 2016. When one election cycle ends, I move on to the next one. Of course I want to protect DREAMers and I want DACA restored and a clean DREAM Act. It’s a fight that we can’t give up on and it’s one we have to keep pushing Democrats on. You can hope and wish for a new party like so many people here talk about but never have a plan to make that happen. OR you can continue to push this party and fight. No more arguing with each other. Get involved now. Pro-DACA groups of course are disappointed today and felt let down but that doesn’t mean they haven’t given up. If the actual organizations aren’t giving up, neither should you my fellow Kossacks. When you waste time arguing with each other in the comments or even posting your outrage comments, that’s time that you could be using to get involved with organizations and groups that aren’t giving up. For example, I signed up to join the group, United We Dream. They are just one organization fighting hard for DACA and they are wasting no time mounting pressure on Congress to move forward to protect DREAMers. Here’s the e-mail I received today:
This is an outrage. Congress just voted on a three-week Continuing Resolution, which means more than 2,000 immigrant youth will lose protection from deportation in the next few weeks. We have said it before, and we will say it again: promises won’t protect immigrant youth from deportation. It’s way past time for Congress to deliver solutions!
We have 17 days to hold Congress' feet to the fire and make sure their promises result in real action. This is our mission, and we need every single United We Dream member and ally to make a call today to make it happen. Will you take action?
>> Call 478-488-8059 <<
You'll be connected to a member of Congress who needs to hear from you. Here's what you can say:
Hi my name is ____ and I’m calling to demand protection for immigrant youth. They cannot continue to live in fear of deportation. We need action now!
Miguel was dragged, detained, and taken over to a detention camp on his way to get coffee. Luis was kicked 3 times in the head by ICE agents! He could be home with his family but instead he is in a detention center. This treatment is cruel, and it’s wrong. This is why we need a Dream Act, right now. If we’re forced to continue living without a Dream Act, there will be many more stories like Miguel’s and Luis’.
Call Congress at 478-488-8059 and tell them we need a Dream Act for people like Miguel, Luis and many more who are facing deportation.
We cannot let immigrant youth continue to lose protection and be targeted by ICE. We deserve to feel safe in a country we call home.
Thank you for taking action,
Adrian and the rest of the team at United We Dream
P.S. During this crucial period, we need your help more than ever. We will continue organizing bold actions to mount pressure on Congress, but we need your help to fund them. Please chip in whatever you can afford to support our next phase of actions:
You can call that number above. Need to feel even more motivated to get out of your defeatist mood? Watch this below:
I’ll have more election based diaries and ones aimed towards the DREAm Act. For now, start dialing that number and get involved with United We Dream. Click here.
Also, don’t waste your time writing defeatists sounding, snark on this diary. Plenty of diaries to that but you should channel all your anger and frustration into activism. Not comments.
