From ABC (the other one—www.abc.net.au/...):
Jade Hameister is not your average high-schooler. At 16, the Melbourne native is the youngest person to accomplish what’s known as the polar hat trick: reaching both the North and South Poles and crossing Greenland.
She believes in the power of young women and makes no bones about it. After her North Pole expedition, she gave a TEDx talk in Melbourne to inspire young women to ignore the social roles imposed by others and strive for their own goals.
Among the admiring comments to the YouTube video, there were the inevitable ignorant young men threatened by competent females, who dropped the chauvinist cliche, “Make me a sandwich.”
So…
On her next grand outing, to Antarctica, Hameister (apt name, as you’ll see) decided to oblige. At camp, she prepared a ham and cheese sandwich in her tent and skied a klick to the pole. Where she most thoroughly served her trolls.
Tonight (it never gets dark this time of year) I skied back to the Pole again... to take this photo for all those men who commented “Make me a sandwich” on my TEDX Talk. I made you a sandwich (ham & cheese), now ski 37 days and 600km to the South Pole and you can eat it xx
Bon appétit, boys.
Addendum:
One commenter on the TEDx video griped,
At what point are we going to acknowledge, the only reason she was able to do that was BECAUSE she has access to her parents' money?
I don’t know Ms. Hameister’s family circumstances, but, if it is your desire to visit Antarctica, the National Science Foundation’s US Antarctica program is always taking applications for visitors. There are openings not only for researchers but support staff (I know a young man who spent a season there painting dormitories). For more information, see www.usap.gov/…
(Note that the NSF does not allow visits for private sightseeing and fun-seeking.)
