Yeah I know, but if you’ve never seen snow then it is a big deal.
January 2018
SNOW!! Well, more like ice in some places but big news all thru the Tallahassee region - from the Gulf Coast, across the Big Bend and up into South Georgia.
Since I’m to the west of this rare event, I totally missed it. My daughter and 2 grandkids closer to the coast got a smattering of it and, like so many others, had multiple photos and vidoes posted to FB. Why not, when you are a youngster it’s something you’ll remember forever. Growing up in upstate NY, enduring lake-effect storms, experiencing the Blizzard of ’66 when roads where closed for almost a week, I understand the excitement.
Even the National Weather Service got into the spirit of the day and produced this map.
The Tallahassee office also had this to say as we broke another record in these times of unusual weather events.
Early Wednesday Morning, a combination of freezing rain and sleet began across the Florida Big Bend and moved into South Central Georgia. The precipitation transitioned to all snow, generally along and north of a line from Crawfordville, FL to Madison, FL around 8 AM ET. South of this line, the precipitation remained generally freezing rain. All wintry precipitation ended around 11 AM ET across our region.
Significant ice and snow accumulations for this portion of the country were reported across the region. This event also produced the first measurable snowfall for Tallahassee since December 23, 1989, a period of 28 years. Additionally, based on official records at Tallahassee, which date back to April 1885, this is the first measurable snowfall in Tallahassee during the month of January.
Then they followed with a list of snowfall amounts for various small towns thru the region submitted by volunteer weather observers.
A friend in Thomasville, GA (NE of Tally) took this photo. She was as excited as the little ones.
My sister up in Rochester, NY just had to tease me and texted last night to inquire if I needed a snowshovel. Meanwhile they are suffering thru extreme cold temps while the usual places along the east shore of Lake Ontario got their usual foot or 2 of snow. Not much more to say about this but how about you? What’s going on where you live?
