The Democratic senator up for re-election in 2018 who’s under the most attack by Republicans may surprise you. While Republicans have promised a fierce barrage of attacks on Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, it’s Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin who takes this dubious prize:
Conservative groups have so far spent at least $3.1 million against Baldwin, which is more than what all the other Democratic Senate incumbents on the ballot this year have faced combined (under $550,000), according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Those figures reflect what these groups have publicly reported to the Federal Election Commission. But the Baldwin campaign has tracked the spending on ads and found there’s even more money flowing into the state that aims to undercut her political fortunes. So-called dark money groups don’t have to necessarily report this spending to the FEC because their efforts don’t specifically call for Baldwin’s defeat.
Nine groups have spent more than $4.7 million on ads that attack Baldwin and/or boost one of the Republicans vying to oppose her, according to her campaign’s tracking[.]
Baldwin represents a state where Donald Trump eked out a narrow win, where former Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold was defeated (again) by Republican Sen. Ron Johnson, and where Gov. Scott Walker will be on the ballot running for his third term. And she’s no wobbly, weak Democrat—she’s strong on a wide range of issues. Of course Republicans want to take her down, and think they have a shot at it.
Help distract Republicans from their attacks on Tammy Baldwin by forcing them to go on the defensive in Nevada and Arizona. Can you give $1 to the Democratic nominee funds for those critical Republican-held seats?
