Wow. Tons of hand wringing about the imagined candidacy of Oprah Winfrey.
I agree with everything that’s being said about the value of electing a more seasoned professional to operate the federal government.
It’s just that those arguments miss the point entirely.
The decision, when and if it comes to it, won’t be about whether Oprah Winfrey would be good for our country and the world. The question will be would she be better than the republican she is up against.
In the precise context of leading the United States in the wake of Donald Trump, can you honestly point to a single republican who you would want for that job?
I’m sorry. Democrats could put up a tree stump and it would be more healing to the country than someone from a party that has made a devils pact with Donald Trump.
So I say bring it on. You prefer someone else to Oprah Winfrey? Fine. Let them demonstrate their fitness by getting more votes.
A lot of progressives were apparantly astonished in 2017 to discover that that you don’t get to set public policy unless you win. Im fairly certain they won’t be as naive in 2018 and 2020.
Win first. Govern next. There is no chance at all that a win by any Democrat, from now until that man is driven from office, will be seen as anything other a mandate to undo the damage he has done.
For this reason, and without either minimizing or gushing about Oprah’s potential as a political leader, I don’t think it matters at all if our winning candidate is merely popular. Popular does the job that needs to be done just fine.
