Deyshia Hargrave is an Arts teacher at Rene Rost Middle School in the Vermillion Parish School System of Louisiana. She was at a a school board meeting when the topic of a pay raise for the superintendent came up. Hargrave raised her hand, stood up, and calmly asked why they were discussing a raise for the superintendent without acknowledging the teachers and other staff who were directly responsible for enacting the changes being dictated upon them. Specifically, even though the teachers and other employees had taken on the greater challenges and demands, there had been no discussion about a raise for them. What began as a democratic civil discourse about contracts and responsibilities evolved into a situation with the teacher being escorted out of the meeting, cuffed, and booked into jail. The entire event is disturbing. Welcome to Trump’s new Gilded Age.
