So as an antidote to the awful aspects of last Thursday’s circus of a hearing on sniveling drunk preppy predator Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination, I have been browsing around late-night comedy’s responses to it, and one thing has really struck me: the shows are presenting it more accurately and honestly — i.e. with more journalistic integrity — than the corporate media is.
They aren’t disappearing Christine Blasey Ford, but lauding her as she deserves to be lauded. They are not normalizing Kavanaugh, but justifiably ridiculing and lambasting him. They aren’t pretending he didn’t lie, dodge, shriek and sob like an entitled toddler, in extreme contrast to Dr. Ford’s precision, humility, forthcomingness and self-control. They are not treating Lindsey Graham’s vicious outburst with any dignity, but with the disgust it truly warrants. They are pointing out, hard, that it need not be he-said-she-said but that a real FBI investigation is required. In other words, in the spirit of Jon Stewart, who was said by many to be more accurate than the straight shows during the Bush years, they were taking over journalism’s job.
So, as a public service to the Kos community, I offer a thorough round-up, starting with my personal favourite:
Stephen Colbert.
Part 1: Christine Blasey Ford
Part 2: Brett Kavanaugh
Bonus clip: 11 Angry Men
Samantha Bee (who didn’t have a show but still wanted to sound off, her message mostly to survivors.)
John Oliver (entire show, full of trenchant analysis as well as many laughs and a twist ending:
Trevor Noah
Jimmy Kimmel
Seth Meyers
And, of COURSE: Saturday Night Live (h/t to Holly Figueroa O’Reilly & Leslie Salzillo)
This first tweet has the same bit — the more complete one is the lower one.
Kate McKinnon IS perfect:
You’ve already seen McKinnon’s Lindsay Graham so scroll down for her Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “That’s a Ginsburn!”
Bonus SNL clip: Washington Post puts reality and satire side by side.
If I’ve missed any good ones let me know in the comments and I’ll add.
Because: if we don’t laugh, we’ll go craaaaaazy...
