In Los Angeles area last night, people were stunned when water mysteriously fell from the sky and darkness was shattered by bright flashes of heavenly light. The hashtag #LArain trended on Twitter.
An October rain storm with thunder and lightning is uncommon in general, but this year was exceptionally hot and dry.
This last rainfall season (2017-2018) was the driest for Los Angeles since 2006-2007 and the third driest since rainfall records began being kept in 1877. source

That storm resulted in amazing lightning photos.
And videos.
Also the sky noise thingie.
People stopped what they were doing to stare. High school football games were cancelled. Huntington Beach closed. People had to watch youtube videos to learn how to turn on car windshield wipers.
I’m assembling this Friday night and really hope I don’t wake up tomorrow to hashtags of the new wildfires in LA area from lightning strikes.
Some of the lightning strikes already started fires but so far they’ve been extinguished fast.
Lightning struck palm trees at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos, setting six to 10 trees on fire, said Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority. Fortunately, there were no buildings close by, he added.
Yeah I know people back east are thinking — you guys are lame. We’ve been having hurricanes and torrential rainfalls with floods and everything. Maybe you don’t know how rare is thunder and lightning in California — we hardly ever have big lightning storms with loud crashes and heavy rain.
But the wildfire threat in SoCal is still an issue despite the rain.
Also fire watch at my house, hundreds of miles north.

I’ve been indoors most of the past week doing election and rabble rousing stuff and when outside was standing on a city street holding a protest sign. Not much nature news from me except a squirrel flashing past my window and a new neighborhood cat triggering the parrot alarm. So the LA rain offered something to celebrate even though I’m far away. Maybe one day we’ll have rain of our own to celebrate.
