Vote, yes vote and get everybody else out to vote but don’t think that simply voting will make the changes necessary. Democracy has to be more than voting and installing responsible legislators in office. It is also organizing on the ground to do what needs to be done whether or not we have good legislators or good laws. Democracy is a do it yourself project and voting is probably the easiest task. We gotta do more to be fully empowered citizens. Good thing we have the power if we only grasp it.
Best case scenario I can come up with after Election Day is there isn’t just a blue wave but a blue tsunami and it washes as many Republicans as possible out of office. However, Trmp will say it is a rigged election, the Republican candidates will refuse to concede, and there will be recount after recount, challenge after challenge. Remember what happened to Al Franken after his first election. Has Roy Moore conceded yet?
Worst case scenario is that the election has already been stolen by the Republicans which is the reason that savvy politicians like Mitch McConnell has been saying the silent parts out loud, announcing a few weeks before the polls that, to paraphrase, “Yes, we are coming for Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, and every other benefit for the 99% we can get so we can give it all to the 1%.” They are doing that so they can say, “We told you what we were going to do before the election so you can’t claim you didn’t vote for it after the ‘votes’ have been tallied.”
Get ready. We know that the Republican Party as presently constituted wants all the power, will do anything to get it and retain it. Recognize that reality and, like good Girl and Boy Scouts, be prepared. Be very prepared. Think about your contingency plans for the day after Election Day, please.
And remember to vote but we all have to do more than vote.
