People have responded in amazing numbers to the opportunity that Vote Forward offers to write to other voters, complete strangers, to exhort them to cast a ballot in this election. I think a major part of the appeal is the part of the letter that writers personalize: “I have pledged to vote in every election because…”.
It matters to vote. So much depends on our votes. People have suffered and died to gain the opportunity to vote. If voting were meaningless, there would not be so many barriers raised against people voting.
But how often do we have the chance to articulate for ourselves or for anyone else why we find it so utterly important? That opportunity is, I think, part of the special appeal of this GOTV activity.
I am very curious to read what you all have chosen or are choosing to write. Are you writing the same thing? Have you picked completely different reasons, if you change them up, or are you refining your message over time?
The floor is YOURS. So come on in, pour yourselves a cuppa, and settle in with your computer, your printer, and your pens, envelopes, and stamps. And tell us why you’ve taken part in this initiative that will reach over a million voters before we’re through.
