This post is in response to Davey1107’s thoughtful diary about scaling Kavanaugh’s lying from the standpoint of internal and external motivations. To me, that doesn’t matter.
Republican senators’ exhortations that range from “He’s not such a bad guy,” “Why didn’t she report it?” and “Democrats are simply obstructing the process for reasons [Clinton conspiracy, bitterness for Garland, etc.,] and a collection of other mind-numbing and embarrassing explanations thrown against the wall to see what sticks. All Grade A Bullshit.
Only one thing matters: Protect Trump and protect the Republican Party. The depths of deceit to which the Party will plumb measures in the fight or flight level of survival instinct. They’re too big to fly, leaving only fight for survival by any means possible.
Have any writers or philosophers explored the condition of human thought that allows a population to be flat-out duped by its leaders? That the masses can be called to fight your battles in the war of greed and power with nothing more than discovering the fraud after you’ve been eaten alive by someone else’s agenda? Medieval kings at least promised land or a secure place in heaven for their armies.
The billionaire class, the .01%-ers, of which there isn’t a single congressman, have managed to get congress to do its bidding. To reward a retiring congressman with a $10M job after retirement is peanuts compared to the combined wealth of the Koch Brothers, Mercers, Adelsons, Mellon-Scaiffes, etc. Keep dangling that in front of congressmen and you’ll keep them begging like baby birds in the nest.
I’m convinced that this is congress’ sole motivation. McConnell tells them it’s do-or-die time for the Party and Kavanaugh is the sole savior. Their reward on earth will be millions in their political afterlife. The reward to the Donor Class is, without exaggerating, trillions in amassed wealth.
The alternative is, without exaggeration, the death of the Republican Party.
