Mitch McConnell says he "will not be intimidated" by the sexual assault survivors who have confronted him and other Republican senators attempting to appeal to their humanity and sense of decency. "There is no chance in the world that they’re going to scare us out of doing our duty." The New York Times prints those words in a story that is hard to read as anything but laudatory for McConnell's "marching straight ahead, unfazed by his opponents, toward his goal of seating Judge Kavanaugh on the court."
They quote Republican senators like Georgia's Johnny Isakson, who says "Obviously Mitch has got his heart and soul in this. […] I think he’s acquitted himself well as a leader regardless of whether or not he’s successful on the vote." They do also quote Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who misses the mark of what it is that McConnell has wrought. "It is galling, appalling, to hear day after day the majority leader get on his high horse about delay, when he almost invented the word when it comes to judicial nominations," says Schumer.
It is galling. Particularly remembering McConnell's boast ahead of the 2016 election, "One of my proudest moments was when I looked Barack Obama in the eye and I said, 'Mr. President, you will not fill the Supreme Court vacancy.'" So, yes, McConnell crying crocodile tears over this confirmation delay is infuriating when you consider what he did to Merrick Garland.
But the problem is much bigger than McConnell's hypocrisy. It's the wanton destruction of our institutions of government that's the problem. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) tweets about the rigged process. "One copy of the FBI report. No more than an hour to review it. No ability for any follow up. Then a rushed vote," Murphy says. Then he nails the issue: "For 2 years, McConnell has been carefully and purposefully breaking the Senate. This is the final blow. No comity or tradition left. It's just about power politics."
McConnell has broken the Senate in order to break the Supreme Court, to install a justice who the entire mainstream legal establishment has rejected. He's doing it for the man who is sitting in the Oval Office thanks in large part to the interference of of Vladimir Putin, interference that McConnell covered up from the American people.
Trump isn't the real Russian asset unleashed to destroy the fabric of our nation. It's Mitch McConnell.
It's time to shut Mitch McConnell and the Republicans down. Please help with $3 to our Senate candidates.
