Bear with me here….I’m going to talk about money. I don’t like the stuff much, which I can do because, as it happens, I have a fair amount: it’s relatively easy to have socialist tendencies when your bills are getting paid on time, etc. And, for the record, yes, I earned it.
But it’s not my money that’s at issue. It’s all these Republican goofballs. Let’s start with Kavanaugh, a guy who apparently can run up $60 grand in credit card debt, and then, when it comes under scrutiny, presto, it evaporates. Really? Nice trick if you can manage it, but, well, if you’ve got that kind of cash lying around, why would you have the debt in the first place? And he really should have had that cash lying around: he’s been knocking down around $250K per year for a while now, and the kids aren’t headed for the Ivies anytime real soon, so you’d think he’d be fairly flush. Nope: dude hasn’t got a frickin’ bean by DC standards….according the Open Secrets, he’s claiming around $65K in assets, aside from an unknown quantity of equity in a million-dollar house (in DC, that ain’t much of a house).
And Lindsey Graham, been at our trough for-fuckin’-ever at a couple hundred grand a year: he rings up less than a half a million net worth. No kids, not even a spouse or (apparent) significant other. Hmm.
How do they do it? I made moderately serious money, but nothing like a quarter-million a year, and I made it for less than a decade before I retired with no debt, a nice house in Seattle (since moved), and pretty much everything else I need for the rest of my days. How do you piss away that kind of dough, legally? Sure I blew through a fair amount in my younger days, on blow and scotch and horses and excessive canoodling (which is how I ended up broke at 40), but, theoretically, none of the above are particularly appropriate to the august leaders of our beloved country.
I’m just going to leave this open for your active imaginations….
Check out opensecrets.org, if you haven’t already: it’s interesting to see what congressfolk do with their money, and how few of them actually have any to speak of. Makes a fella wonder…
