House Speaker (but only for another three months!) Paul Ryan has no idea what's going to happen after the election when Russian asset Donald Trump insists he has to have his border wall. All that he knows is that it will be a "big fight."
Speaking at the National Press Club Monday, Ryan said "We intend on having a full-fledged discussion about how to complete this mission of securing our border, and we will have a big fight about that. […] We'll figure out how to do it in December." He added, "I can't speak to what the outcomes will be." The fight has been temporarily averted, with leadership being able to talk Trump down from his desired position—a government shutdown before the election to really rile people up. Congress and Trump came to an agreement last month, passing legislation to fund about 75 percent of the government for a year, and the 25 percent that they have to fight over after the election expires on December 7.
That includes the funding for border security which Trump insists must be $5 billion and it must be a wall. Senate Democrats have agreed to as much as $1.6 billion, and no more. And of course it's not going to come from Mexico. "We have a commitment to go fight for securing the border and getting these policy objectives achieved," says Ryan. Whatever that means.
It's impossible to predict how Trump and losing House Republicans will react to losing the House, which they are almost certainly going to do. Will they go on one last horrible hurrah, knowing they've got nothing else to lose by shutting down the government? Trump will want his shutdown no matter what. But will his losers help him?
Our best bet at averting that would seem to be creating an incoming Democratic House majority so big that the Republicans who are going to have to come back in January to work with them are chastened into fighting Trump and the maniacs. So let's do it.
