Immense harm is being done to people every time the President uses his position to paint Democrats and the "left" as radicals, immigrants as terrorists and criminals, the press as a tool of the left, etc. Harm is done to those groups by his supporters who are activated to lash out against them, and harm is done to those same supporters who are being whipped into a frenzy of negative,hair-triggered emotion, loss of inner compass and capacity to connect and relate to others, often leading to irreparable acts that will ruin their lives as well as those of their victims. How can we counter this when so much of the media "diet" of this sector of the public is corrupt?
What about asking our representatives, on all levels of public life, to stand up in a group and simply state, in response to each new speech or tweet, things like "the people in today's march are not a mob, they are ordinary citizens just like you." "The famous "caravan"is a group of ordinary folks who. like many of your ancestors, have lost their homes to violence and are seeking refuge. As Democrats we say, hire Americans to do the work of offering them a safe place where they can do as our ancestors did- work, struggle and find their place in a safer society." “We are not here to represent special interest groups, but to do our best to ensure fair and equal treatment for members of ALL the many groups that make up the patchwork quilt of America.”
Whatever the message, we would need a big effort to get it out, through TV spots, newspaper ads, and billboards. Social media as well, but it is so siloed, my thought is it would only be useful if the other, open-air methods begin to work. We need to find a way to cut through the noise and say a few simple things, repeatedly.
Any ideas?
