Donald Trump recreated one of his biggest Russia-probe bloopers from 2017 in a Wednesday interview with the conservative outlet the Daily Caller. After famously telling NBC's Lester Holt last year that "this Russia thing" was on his mind when he fired then-FBI Director James Comey, Trump freely associated the "illegal" Russia probe with his appointment of acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker.
"I knew him only as he pertained, you know, as he was with Jeff Sessions," Trump said in response to his "thinking" about the attorney general position. "And, you know, look, as far as I'm concerned this is an investigation that should have never been brought. It should have never been had. It's something that should have never been brought. It's an illegal investigation."
Huh. Why not just say right out loud that he appointed Whitaker to handle an investigation that he thinks is "illegal"? Oh wait: He did just say that.
