It really did sting to watch Sen. Heitkamp lose to Rep. Cramer. Especially by the margin she did. The Democratic-NPL Party in North Dakota is in tough shape right now. Barely over a decade ago the state’s entire Washington delegation was Dem.
Her loss though has not lessened Sen Heitkamp’s drive for safety in Indian Country. It’s called Savanna’s Act, and it’s long overdue.
The legislation would improve data collection on tribal victims, remove barriers for tribal law enforcement and create guidelines for responding when someone’s reported missing.
In the meantime, Fargo Forum op-ed writer, Rob Port, continues his assaults against the Senator and her family. Apparently he’s having a sad that the Senator never actually called Rep. Cramer to concede. Outrageous! And now he’s pointed his keyboard at the Senator’s family, who are some sort of evil cabal running the state? Okay….
Fellow Forum columnist Jim Shaw (he’s got a wicked sense of humor btw) wondered aloud what Port might write about now that Sen. Heitkamp will be leaving the Senate. It appears that she will still be a focus for him. How nice…
Forum columnist Mike McFeely hopes the D-NPL Party can rebuild itself. He’s not the only one.
Even the right-leaners at the Forum Editorial Board lamented the demise of a strong two-party system in the state. Of course, they also strained a ligament patting themselves on the back for endorsing three(!) Dems running for office…between North Dakota and Minnesota combined. How nice…
I hope that Sen. Heitkamp continues her work on behalf of the state’s Indigenous population. They deserve an advocate with her passion and drive.
Here’s a thought — in a post-Trump presidency world, Heidi would make a great U.S. Attorney for North Dakota. Why not?
