On Tuesday, November 13, 2018 the Washington Post posted this article with great news for Jane O’Meara Sanders and for Senator Bernie Sanders, and of course, for all those who support them.
The US Attorney in Vermont stated they have completed their investigation of Jane Sanders regarding her time at Burlington College. There will be no charges brought against Mrs. Sanders and the investigation is closed.
The allegations of wrongdoing and/or outright fraud were instigated by Republican, Brady Toensing, the GOP Chairman of the Vermont Republican Party, who has tried to discredit the couple for years. The investigation centered on the 2010 land purchased by Jane Sanders, which she purchased to move and expand the college. The land in question was purchased from a Catholic Church at a “fire-sale” price.
In my research, which started back in 2016 when this story first came out, I found that she bought the land from a Catholic church which needed the money. The plan was to sell a good chunk of the property which would have covered the costs of the purchase, or at the least, would not have put them in a financial burden. While I do not know the specific reason she was forced to resign, she did. She resigned before her vision was accomplished. I also do not know the story behind the donations, donors, when money would be received, etc. but this is something, I’m sure, that the attorney’s office looked into, and for whatever reason, decided not to bring any charges against her.
Jane purchased the land in 2010. By 2011, she was forced to resign. In 2016, the college closed its doors. I’m not sure how long we can hold her responsible for a business that she left five years prior. And when does it become the responsibility of those who came after? From my research, had they sold the land as she had planned to do, they would not have had to close their doors.
I am not the great writer that many are here, but no one else posted this story...and to me, it is a big deal. This is cause for celebration! I am happy and relieved, even though I never believed either one was capable of this type of criminal activity. So happy to hear she (they both) was cleared of any charges. Because yes, there are those who still think he had a hand in this to push for the bank to finance this. Even a GOP’er in Vermont said that was not the case. CASE CLOSED!
