The U.S. Senate election runoff between Mike Espy and Cindy Hyde-Smith has been racially charged, as many things in Mississippi are. However, Hyde-Smith has made outdated jokes about lynching and voter suppression that are not only racist by today’s standards, but were racist at their origin. Considering that Hyde-Smith’s opponent Espy is black, these statements have brought up the ignorance and glibness of institutionalized racism, and have also highlighted the hateful and dangerous nature of bigotry.
Two nooses were found hanging at the Mississippi State Capitol on Monday morning around 7:15, according to NBC affiliate WLBT.
Hate signs were also found and taken down, though what was written on those signs has not been reported. WLOX reports that local authorities say they are reviewing security camera footage to try and figure out who put up the vile symbols and signs.
Help Mike Espy get out the vote by signing up to make calls to voters ahead of tomorrow’s vote!
