From a distance my garden looks great — lush green mounds, color and variety in the Fall blooming season. However, on closer inspection, there are weeds, nut sedge, invading bermuda and mushrooms everywhere!
It’s been raining for two months (September and October had a total of 28.3 inches). Everything is going/growing wild. Weeding has been impossible in the incessant rain.
Now for the not-so-great stuff.
And not to be outdone:
I weeded all day Monday and Tuesday — the first dry days in weeks. It rained on Wednesday. Thursday the grass was so mushy the weeding stool sank into the ground, tipping me over into the sopping lawn. My dignity got embarrassingly wet and cold.
The yard crew is scheduled to start the dig-out process of the three weediest backyard beds next week. There are now so many weed seeds in those beds it’s easier to replace with weed-free organic bedding mix/compost/top soil (and mulch) and send the crappy soil to the dump. After much arguing, the crew has agreed not to use Roundup. I refuse to use a carcinogen in my flower garden. We will be armed with 12” tall edging and professional grade weed barrier cloth that both can be cut to size. Still have to dig out the peonies and bulbs and put in pots while this project is ongoing. I have 20 new red spider lily bulbs to plant as well.
Then we start in the front to tackle the cactus rock garden that has been invaded with the despised nut sedge. Planning to divide the pups from the blue agave and agave parryi truncata artichoke cactus. I hope the red yuccas won’t have to be dug out — they’re still blooming! The order for the new soil/compost etc. has been placed. My pocketbook and back hurt.
At least it will be cool enough (60s) to work without getting sweaty.
May your autumn gardening be easier than mine!!!
Remember to turn back the clock 1 hour at 2am………………………….Yay! An extra hour of sleep!
