From the GREAT STATE OF MAINE…
Hi. Happy Votey Duty Day! I wasn't planning to post C&J this morning (and this abbreviated one isn't the usual format), but I've had this niggling voice in the back of my head that keeps telling me we should have Molly Ivins’ presence watching over us today. Gone for 11 years, but no less relevant today. And since the chemo didn’t drop me like a dead tree yesterday, I was able to cobble some of her wit and perspective together with the help of some super drugs and one notable herb. Here, feed your soul with some classic kick-ass Molly as we prepare to go once more unto the breech, dear friends:
» “The only problem was, the founders left a lot of people out of the Constitution. They left out poor people and black people and female people. It is possible to read the history of this country as one long struggle to extend the liberties established in our Constitution to everyone in America. And it still goes on today.”
» “When politicians start talking about large groups of their fellow Americans as 'enemies,' it's time for a quiet stir of alertness. Polarizing people is a good way to win an election, and also a good way to wreck a country.”
» "The United States of America is still run by its citizens. The government works for us. Rank imperialism and warmongering are not American traditions or values. We do not need to dominate the world. We want and need to work with other nations. We want to find solutions other than killing people. Not in our name, not with our money, not with our children's blood."
» "There's never been a law yet that didn't have a ridiculous consequence in some unusual situation; there's probably never been a government program that didn't accidentally benefit someone it wasn't intended to. Most people who work in government understand that what you do about it is fix the problem---you don't just attack the whole government."
» "Politics is not a picture on a wall or a television program you can decide you just don't care for. Our entire lives are set into and written by the warp and woof of politics. Political decisions affect your life every day in thousands of ways."
» “I prefer someone who burns the flag and then wraps themselves up in the Constitution over someone who burns the Constitution and then wraps themselves up in the flag.”
» Do not sit there cowering and pretending the only way to win is as Republican-lite. If the Washington-based party can't get up and fight, we'll find someone who can.
» “Voting improves your children's manners, renders your dog more obedient and prompts your spouse to take on more household chores. Also, voting is the only way to make political ads go away.
And it cures acne.
Politics is not about those people in Washington or those people at the state capitol. Politics is about us---you, me and the guy next to us. We run this country, we own this country, and we have a responsibility to hire the right people to drive our bus for a while.”
Below the fold: a couple must-watch vids to get your day started on a blood-pumping note, including the latest from Randy Rainbow, and stand-up comic Steve Hoffsetetter (gloriously NSFW) owning a Trumpbot at a comedy club, and setting a few facts straight in the process.
Stay close to Daily Kos tonight for Elections Team Liveblogging---”The Best In The Business!” Meanwhile, let's do some shellacking today, shall we? Yes. Let's.
Steve Hoffstetter is fast becoming one of my favorite stand up comics. Here he’s interrupted by a Trumpbot, and it goes as gloriously off the rails as you hope it will:
-
And Randy Rainbow, perhaps the best musical parodist working today in the age of Trump, whipped up another classic for Election Day:
-
And this great (and NSFW) last-minute addition: an ad in support of Massachusetts’ Question 3, which would preserve transgender rights in the commonwealth. Great premise, strong finish:
-
Floor’s open. What are you cheering and jeering about today?
