Democrats won big last night. History was made across the country as women of color and LGBT people broke through what were once thought insurmountable obstacles to unseat the old hegemony in states and localities. According to the Nevada Independent, an important bit of history is taking place in the Battle Born State. The state’s Assembly looks like it will end up with a Democratic supermajority, and possibly a 22-20 majority of women. The state’s Senate, not unlike our nation’s Senate, isn’t following the trends of democracy, but there is a chance that the state legislature in total will break towards women.
Between the two houses, there will likely be 33 men and 30 women serving in the Legislature. But if Segerblom and Ford’s replacements are women, there would be 32 women and 31 men in the Legislature — the first time in both state and national history that a legislative body is majority female.
State Sens. Segerblom and Ford won election to new government positions, and the chance is there for Democratic leadership to appoint women and make history.
