I know, I know, this, from a citizen in South Carolina. With a history of individuals like Strom Thurmond, Lindsey Graham and Jim DeMint … Nuts.
They define stupid, they define incompetence (at least they did, until Incompetent-in-Chief showed up), they define indifference to the needs and wishes of the people. So, no, the event that prompted tonight’s diary offers no new insight, whatsoever. I knew it before.
But this is something of a level beyond.
More below.

Talking Points Memo posted an article about the letter that Tim Scott wrote Wall Street Journal about latter day judicial nominees. The title of that article is: “Stop Nominating People With Questionable Records On Race.”
Stupid.
You may recall that Scott sank the nomination of Thomas Farr to District Court (contributed to the sinking! Democrats did the heavy lifting!). Prior to that, he had helped sink Circuit Court nominee Ryan Bounds.
Of course, the problem is, there is nothing questionable about the records of so many of these nominees on race. He didn’t oppose them because they were ‘questionable.’ He opposed them because they weren’t. He knew how they’d ‘serve.’ And there would never be a time when they’d be positive about any race issues. One would have to be stupid to think otherwise. It is WHY they were nominated. Because the nominator COUNTED on their unquestionably racist credentials and commitments.
If any question remains about his stupidity, read this line from the WSJ letter:
We must not seek to sow the seeds of discord, but rather embrace the power of unity. Simply put, if the Senate votes on a candidate that doesn’t move us in that direction, I will not support him or her. Our country deserves better.
Right. Neil Gorsuch moves us toward unity. Brett Kavanaugh moves us toward unity.
In a pig’s eye.
Senator, you have NO idea what the word means. Worse, you don’t really care.
One final piece of advice, Senator. You wrote:
Over the past two years the Senate has confirmed a record number of judicial nominees. I have proudly voted for more than 99% of them, and will continue to support quality candidates in the future.
If you really want your words to be taken seriously, your actions need to match your words. Your history is voting for 99% of Republican nominees. That’s the definition of a Senator who may be relied upon to mindlessly rubber-stamp any and every Republican nominee. Your ‘pride’ is catastrophically misplaced. And the entire country suffers the THOROUGHLY divisive consequences.
On to tonight’s comments!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
