I hold zero faith they’d do this, but here is how Sens Collins, Flake, Corker, McCain, all of whom have made feints at sanity and putting country over party, could prevent Mueller’s firing or if done provide an antidote.
If two of the four announce that for the remainder of this Congress (til early next January) they are changing from Repub in Ind, and will caucus with the Dems, if Mueller is fired, it would either stop the move, or, if done, would allow the Dems to organize a committee to take over the work. They then could return to Repub caucus (Collins at least; two are leaving, McCain’s status uncertain of course) next year.
Collins would enhance her reelection chances, Flake if he is thinking of running for president at least does something dramatic (maybe he leads a breakaway section of the GOP), McCain will never run again, not sure what Corker is doing next.
Does nothing to change their votes, likely most bad ones and GOP favoring.
But it would be a game changer in terms of blunting the impact of the firing, if not stop it all together.
