Some candidates have spoken of their views on LGBTQIA rights in terms of evolution. They have “come around” to thinking that certain rights now merit protection. Perhaps they didn’t always support equality, but they do now, and that’s what matters.
That’s not me.
I’m not the kind of person whose values have to evolve. I may change my mind about a strategy or a tactic to solve a problem, but my core values are not going to change. Equality is something I have always stood for because people should have the right to marry, they have the right to high-quality and affordable healthcare, and everyone has the right to serve in the military. These things have always been important to me.
For my entire career, I have been fighting for equality. When I worked in a homeless shelter in California, I made sure our policies and procedures allowed anyone, regardless of gender identity, sexual identity or sexual orientation, to access our program and to receive the support they needed. Working in Chicago, I started a project to help lesbian women get support for domestic violence.
In Omaha, where I’ve lived for 12 years, I ensured Metropolitan Community College added the word gender identity to our non-discrimination politics to ensure all people are able to attend school without fear of discrimination or retribution. Adding these simple words makes it clear that MCC is inclusive and open to all in our community.
I am honored to have received the endorsement of Brian Whitecalf, Nebraska Democratic Party LGBTQIA Caucus Chair, last week. He wrote:
I fully endorse Kara Eastman for Congressional District 2. I believe that she will be passionately committed to the LGBTQIA community of Nebraska. She has shown a love for people that are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and their allies. She has been present for our struggles but I also know her professional career has put Kara front and center advocating for fair housing practices, better HIV healthcare access and addressing educational opportunities for those living in poverty. She hasn't been shy about her support of equality and the Omaha metro area needs a visible ally showing up for equitable equality!
I will never stop fighting for marginalized populations. I will be that person who will fight for healthcare and for access to higher education. I will make sure everyone in our community is equally served.
