This is a copy of the letter to the editor I sent this morning after reading the front page of the New York Times, delivered to my house in New Orleans pursuant to my subscription. I took the picturte with my phone after sending this letter. This is the link to the screen shot the Times provides its subscribers app.nytimes.com
To the Editor,
I note on Saturday’s front page you have pictures of all seventeen people who are now dead because of a school shooting three days ago. I commend you for that. However, the headline and the article alongside the pictures refers to some political shade the Republicans are using to deflect attention from the “carnage.” of our failure to pass legislation to control the dissemination of these lethal weapons. This wasn’t necessary. The real news was sitting just below the fold. “Code Red! Mass Shooting Generation Raises Voices for Change.” Imagine the impact that would had on us who are grieving, weeping, for the lives lost to see graphically that our kids are not lying down and taking it any more.
Well you are doing your job. I guess. Watch that you don’t lean over too far backwards to allow the voices of “both sides” for you to topple from your moral tightrope. Surely you understand the impact of placement on the front page. The focus should have been grief and action not Republican attacks on the FBI.
Thank you,
Alice Weiss
