The LA Times is reporting on this incident, which happened yesterday in Seaside High School in Monterey County California. This teacher brought a firearm to school to give a lecture on “Public Safety Awareness”. This teacher serves as a reserve police officer in Sand City California, so they fit the Trump definition of “certain highly adept people, people that understand weaponry, guns — if they really have that aptitude. “
The teacher “inadvertently” fired the gun into the ceiling of the classroom. The bullet went through the ceiling. “A student hit by bullet fragments or ceiling debris sustained a minor neck injury.” Maybe Trump should work on “hardening” school ceilings and walls.
You may notice I did not describe this as an “accident”. Safety experts find calling car crashes “accidents” absolves folks of blame in the cause of the crash and avoids getting to the root cause of the crash. Was the driver speeding? Was this crash caused by a road condition? Was this a car defect? Those are root causes of the problem, not “accident” which just covers intent of the driver. This teacher/reserve officer shouldn’t have brought a loaded firearm into the school for a demonstration- and if they believed the firearm wasn’t loaded and it was, well that was carelessness on the part of the operator. I consider that careless at the least.
So Parkland Students- walk on out of your schools for 17 minutes today and into the history books. You are righteous and this old gun safety advocate joins you in spirit and deed as I call local legislators in Minnesota to support new firearms laws for background checks and reject “Stand Your Ground” and Concealed Carry with no background checks. I will join you in person on March 24 and rallies to come.
