This is a song Phi Ochs’ protege, Sammy Walker, wrote a couple of years after Phil died. It recalls the relatively brief time they spent together in 1975, a time during which Phil produced on Sammy's first album, Songs for Patty. Phil also sings backup on a couple of his songs, including his own composition about Woody Guthrie, “Bound for Glory.” Sammy’ s “Legends” is a lovely song blending a bit of nostalgia with a kind of clear-eyed realism. For the slideshow below, I actually could only find a couple of photos of the two of them together, but most of the pictures of Phil are from the seventies, so at least vaguely contemporary with the period described in the song, although not necessarily from New York. Hope you like it.
