Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono’s (D. HI) U.S. Senate campaign:
This is shameful, friends:
In 1996, Congress passed the Dickey Amendment, which effectively banned the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from conducting critical public health research on gun violence.
The CDC studies auto accidents, child abuse, sexual assault and more. That research saves thousands of lives each year, and it's appalling that gun violence is treated any differently. Our nation has been affected deeply by the needless loss of life caused by gun violence – not only in the mass shootings that have rocked our nation's conscience far too frequently and for far too long – but also through the daily loss of life caused by the easy access to firearms.
Repealing this amendment is a necessary step in understanding gun violence. But we need folks to stand up now – add your name to tell Congress: Repeal the Dickey Amendment.
Mahalo,
Mazie
