Dear Roseanne,
I thought it was time someone pointed out a few facts of life to you. I mean, since you’re playing a humble, middle-class housewife and all. You know, a homey, knowledgeable woman who knows about life and how it should be lived, instead of some rich liberal who doesn’t get what really matters.
The problem with that image is that you’re not a humble, middle-class housewife. You’re a very rich Hollywood actress, pretending to be something you’re not. And that begs the question, just what is it that you really are? Well, Roseanne, it’s easy enough, you’re a bully. In fact, that’s what this is really about. You like and support Donald Trump, and you like and support the owning of guns because you like being a bully.
That you’re a bully is clear, it isn’t just that your character on television is somewhat of a bully, it’s your defining characteristic in real life interviews and interactions. It was your go to, baseline thinking when confronted by a willful, intelligent, 17-year-old boy, “I can bully him to get what I want.”
Bullying is as old as humankind. The first human that killed an antelope and cooked it for his family, was bullied by the next human over who stole his antelope and ate it while he and his family went hungry. There are some who think this is the natural order of things. It starts in high school and permeates life from thereon. The real way you deal with bullying isn’t to stand up to it, it’s to kiss the bully’s donkey, at least that is how the bully’s view the situation.
Donald Trump is a classic bully. He bullied his classmates through high school, he bullies women, he bullies those around him, firing anyone who second guesses him in any fashion, and he admires and respects the greatest bullies in the room, sucking up to them whenever possible. I’ll even tolerate the notion that he didn’t collude with Putin, simply that he fully admires Putin’s ability to bully the world.
At the base of the gun issue is bullying. Most of the people who own guns are both afraid of being bullied and have a deep desire to bully others. “No one is telling me what to do, and if they try, well, I’ll teach them with my trusty AR-15. Now come here woman and cook my food.” This is why they so admire open carry and those areas that promote their right to tell others, especially minorities, what to do. It’s what they most fear about becoming a minority themselves.
I suppose you, Trump, and those like you are our own fault. As the rest of us got tired of being bullied, we put in place rules and structures which took away your God-given right to bully. That was a bridge too far for you. You got mad, hunkered down, and finally found yourselves a President you could admire, the Bully in Cheif.
Here we are today. You’ve recreated your right to bully by forcing your desires and beliefs on the rest of us, empowering life’s biggest bullies along the way. Women don’t have the right to control their bodies unless of course, they’re a bully with money. Blacks, those N-word people, need to shut up and take the beating that white bullies so dearly want to give them. Hispanics need to stop taking white jobs, the ones whites don’t want anyway… okay, they should just allow whites to call them wetbacks and get it over with. Religions have the right to tell us to worship, how to worship, and just how much money we should give to them, I mean to God. The rich rightly run the country that they built, only they didn’t, but they should be allowed to bully those who did build the country until they give up the country they built with their sweat and labor; you know, the working class people that you play at. But most of all, bullies should be allowed to have guns so they can be effective in their bullying, and can shoot anyone who they fear might try and bully them.
Well Roseanne, that brings us back to the facts of life. You see, when that first bully stole his neighbor’s antelope, well, that neighbor got together with the other neighbors and they told the bully to knock it off. Roseanne, we don’t think you, and those like you, have the right to bully. Don’t get too comfortable in your role as a bully. Yep, Trump is having his moment in the sun, but history, and the rest of humanity doesn’t look fondly at bullies. We don’t look fondly at you, we just think you’re a bully, a rather mean and vindictive one. That will be your epitaph.
She played a bully on television, and she was one in life too.
