So we had a very warm February with temps in the mid-70’s for a couple weeks. This caused spring to be sprung much too early. Plants grew and some bloomed. Then we had a cold March with a good couple weeks of below freezing temps all night long. This killed off a lot of plants. We even lost four Oleander trees that we’d planted more than 25 years ago. They were just really getting good by making tons of white flowers last spring. They’re dead now.
We have Meyer’s Lemon trees too. Those are the sturdiest in terms of withstanding freezing temps. We did cover them with fitted sheets every night it got below freezing, but they took a beating. We’ll have to wait to see how much damage was done to them. With lemon trees, you don’t trim back what looks like dead branches until you give them plenty of time to find out what dead-looking stems may still put out new leaves.
April arrived with heavy rains not normally seen here. We got more than 5.5 inches of rain in 18 hours. The days have warmed again as well, but it’s the nighttime temps that really cause plants to take off. We’ve had a number of nights in the lower 50’s which is perfect for spring to explode. By mid-April around here, we don’t normally have to worry about freezing temps at night. This year may be different, however. They’ve predicted that a few nights over the next week and a half will get down to just about freezing. That would be a problem. We shall just have to wait and see.
Let’s see what’s in bloom now before potential freezing nights puts an end to it all. I’ll show you some pics of where things stand around here currently.
