How many lies can fit in 280 characters? Let’s check in with the expert:
- Per Quinnipiac University polling, 63 percent of Americans oppose building a stupid wall along the U.S./Mexico border. In fact, there’s evidence Trump made the idea of a wall less popular after he endorsed it.
- Per CBS News polling, Americans are divided 48 percent to 47 percent on so-called “sanctuary cities,” and a lot of that probably has to do with racists like Donald Trump trying to scare the shit out of people on the topic. What we do know for sure, is that sanctuary cities are safer, because when immigrants aren’t afraid of reporting crimes due to their status, communities are safer for all. And, don’t forget that immigrants are less likely than U.S.-born Americans to commit crime.
- As the Toronto Star’s Daniel Dale points out, “prototypes for Trump’s wall were erected in San Diego, but no actual construction has happened there.” Last month, Trump also claimed that wall construction was ongoing in Calexico, when in fact it was fencing repair ordered under the Obama administration.
- Dale also points out that “the people of San Diego haven’t called for the wall. City Council formally voted to oppose it. Even the Republican mayor has been critical.” In an op-ed this year, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer wrote that “building bridges has worked wonders for the San Diego-Tijuana megaregion.”
- San Diego’s crime rate has dropped to the lowest rate in 49 years, which city leaders attribute to “close ties between police and community members”—the exact kind of relationships Trump is destroying through his sanctuary city attacks!
- But overall, as Congressman Ted Lieu points out, “The Wall hasn't started because Congress hasn't funded it.”
Not that any of this makes any difference to the Liar-in-Chief.
