Great little Q Poll yesterday, huh? Buried in there is the biggest piece of news: O’Rourke leads Cruz 50 - 34 in the 18 - 34 demo. What does that mean?
TURNOUT!!!
I don’t feel the need to recover territory about the national mood. I’m in Harris County, Texas — home of Houston. This is the largest county in the state and third largest in the nation. There are over 2.2 million registered voters here. Repeat after me: over 2.2 million registered voters here. This is a majority minority county with 42.4% Hispanic/Latino, 19.7% Black, and 7% Asian. About 30% is White only.
I want all of you to know that there are PLANS moving forward that are going to carve the County into bite sized pieces to get contacts made. My club (I’m now president of a local Dem club) is specifically targeting an area that sits in CD-7 that is heavily minority, heavily democratic, and pretty much ignored. We are going to change that and reach out to voters there. It was at 43% turnout in 2016. We are going to let those people know they matter.
The area clubs and orgs are going to work to get an actual map of precincts they will contact in concert with those precinct chairs. Gaps will be handled by the regional clubs. This involves working with candidates to make sure every area is getting touched.
Just a note to all incumbents sitting on money with no opponent, the hat will be passed to you. Get your walking shoes ready, because turnout isn’t about contested races only: it is about all those areas getting motivated. People are watching. All I’m saying there.
The calendar is set from now until November. How many calls, how many door knocks, how many postcards can we get to people. That number at the top says everything: the least likely cohort to turnout is the one that is against Cruz (and most GOPers) the most. We have got to get them to the polls. But, plans have been in place, meetings have been held, and the action is in motion.
How do you turn Texas Blue? Turn Harris County into a shining radiant sapphire in November. #ItAllStartsHere
