I have an appreciation for old movies and the broader statements it is possible for them to make. I thought of just such a movie in the context of Paul Ryan’s recent ‘decision’ to not seek re-election in the face of a strong challenge by our impressive Democratic candidate, Randy Bryce.
From his website:
there’s not one issue where Paul Ryan and Donald Trump are headed in the right direction. It’s time for a change in Congress
Could not agree more! And taking Speaker Ryan’s seat is an excellent part of the plan.

Here’s the movie clip I found.
The Captain scared them out of the water! Thank you so much, Captain Bryce!
My theory is a simpler one. I don’t think the speakership ever interested Ryan that much. That isn’t the case of the presidency. Being Speaker with Obama in charge had some possibility, now, with the gang that can’t shoot straight, not only is there no opportunity, there is lasting stigma that would attach to Trump enablers and puppets. Waiting to lose an election was clearly not an option, lest he be tagged with the Santorum effect, of being a very high profile LOSER.
What a choice! Loser or coward. I think his choice was clear. (Though I think he is a loser regardless how cowardly he is.)
Of course, he says it’s for his family. We’ll see, when it comes time for SOMEONE to primary the Loser in Chief, just how important Ryan’s family is to him. Not very, I think.

From Otteray Scribe:
shortfinals left a long encyclopedic entry in pwoodford’s diary comparing the F-86 Sabre with the MiG-15. The discussion had turned to armament used in combat. Shortfinals shared detailed information that was new to me. However, that is nothing unusual when conversing with a former curator of the RAF museum.
(Here is a bit of news that makes me smile. The Smithsonian Air & Space magazine has asked shortfinals to contribute a regular monthly column. Here is a link to his first column: Forgotten Aircraft of the RAF: Remember the Westland Wapiti? How about the Avro Rota?)

I nominate the following by jsteve7. It is a perfect summary of the current situation we find ourselves in regarding our do-nothing Congress.
From BeninSC:
I am nominating this comment by Eyesbright, because of the good news it contains about relatives near a tragedy. Glad.

Is this do-not-miss/must-be-a-diary comment by IreGyre, on NATURAL environmental cycles and the contrast with what we are beginning to see now.
