A poll commissioned by Mike Espy's U.S. Senate campaign shows him leading the pack with 34 percent. It has recently appointed Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith with 27 percent and Republican Chris McDaniel at 21 percent. www.clarionledger.com/…
Espy was the first African American to hold a Mississippi congressional seat since Reconstruction. He was elected three times, serving from 1987-1993. He then served as Secretary of Agriculture in the Clinton administration.
The poll was of 603 likely general election voters, but the linked story does not state when it was taken other than that it was conducted before the Democratic mayor of Tupelo, Jason Shelton, recently announced his candidacy.
This race is a “jungle primary” whereby the top two finishers in November will face each other in a run-off.
