In the face of mounting pressure from endangered Republicans who are trying to force an immigration vote, outgoing Speaker Paul Ryan sought to quash the rebellion Thursday. Even as Ryan claimed, "I want to fix this problem," he effectively killed chances of advancing a DACA-fix saying he wouldn't bring forward any immigration bills not supported by Donald Trump. The Hill writes:
But the Speaker reiterated that the immigration legislation would need to get President Trump’s endorsement first — a tall order given the inability of Trump and Democrats to agree on an immigration compromise. [...]
“I want to have actual law and that means the White House has to be a part of this and it’s got to be a bill the president can sign,” Ryan added.
In other words, don't waste your time since Trump’s demands on immigration and/or a DACA-fix could never pass the Senate even if passed by the House.
The mini GOP rebellion is being led by Florida Rep. Carlos Curbello, who's "toss up" reelection bid stands to benefit from him striking a pro-immigration stance. That's also true of most of the 17 GOP colleagues who have joined his discharge petition to force immigration votes.
Assuming all 193 Democrats would be willing to sign on to the effort, Republicans still need seven more GOP signers to reach the 25 necessary to achieve the majority needed. Democrats appear to be waiting to see how serious these Republicans really are about putting Ryan in a box, or whether they’re just putting on a show.
Of course Ryan, who once promised a Dreamer on live television she needn't worry about being deported, continues to ensure that she and some 700,000 other Dreamers could in fact face deportation.
